Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has been appointed titular bishop of Albano, a suburbicarian diocese near Rome previously held by Pope Leo XIV—then known as Cardinal Robert Prevost.
“The Holy Father has assigned the Title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano to His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization in the Section for First Evangelization and the New Particular Churches,” the Vatican announced in a press release on Saturday.
Earlier this month, Cardinal Tagle joined two other Filipino cardinals in the conclave that elected Prevost as the new pope following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. Prevost was inaugurated as Pope Leo XIV—the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church—on May 18 at a Vatican ceremony where Cardinal Tagle placed the Ring of the Fisherman on the new pope’s finger.
The Ring of the Fisherman symbolizes the pope’s authority as the successor of Saint Peter, the Church’s first leader and a fisherman by trade.
