International Day of Families Celebrated in Lahore with Focus on Child Wellbeing and Strong Family Values

The Catholic Women’s Organization (CWO) Lahore, in collaboration with the Family Life Commission of the Archdiocese of Lahore and Kawish Resource Center Lahore, organized a special awareness program to mark the International Day of Families under the theme “Families: Inequalities and Child Wellbeing.”

The event was held on 16 May 2025 at St. Francis Parish, Kot Lakhpat, Lahore, bringing together more than 130 participants, including men, women, children, members of religious congregations, and community representatives.

The gathering focused on strengthening family values, promoting equality among children, and addressing the challenges affecting the wellbeing of families in today’s changing social environment.

Welcoming the participants, Ms. Shaheen Yousaf, Diocesan Coordinator of CWO Lahore, highlighted the significance of the International Day of Families and emphasized the need to build stronger family relationships while ensuring safe and supportive environments where children can grow with dignity and equal opportunities.

During the session, Rev. Fr. Henry Paul OFM Cap, Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish and Director of the Family Life Commission, reflected on the Christian understanding of family life and reminded participants that children are a gift from God entrusted to the care and protection of families. He stressed the importance of nurturing homes rooted in love, faith, respect, and quality education.

Speakers addressed various social and pastoral concerns affecting families and children. Mrs. Catherine Pervaiz reflected on family prayer and the Holy Family as a model for Christian homes, while Sr. Maggi Yacoob emphasized the importance of cooperation between parents and schools for the healthy development of children, especially young girls.

The program also addressed wider social challenges. Mr. Asif Sardar, Director of Kawish Resource Center, highlighted the impact of economic difficulties and social pressures on family life, while Mr. Peter Charles, Chairman of Pakistan Minority Movement, discussed the significance of the Child Marriage Restraint Act 2026 and the need for greater social and legal awareness.

Speaking on the realities faced by minority communities, Sr. Genevieve Ram Lal, National Director of CWO, reflected on concerns relating to girls’ education, forced marriages, and forced conversions, while expressing hope through recent legal developments and community efforts toward greater protection and dignity.

A moving presentation by the SCJM Postulants highlighted issues of human trafficking, exploitation, and violence against women and children, encouraging participants to work together for the protection of human dignity and justice.

Concluding the program, Fr. Henry Paul expressed appreciation to all partner organizations and participants for their collaboration and commitment. The event served as a meaningful platform for reflection and dialogue, renewing the shared commitment of families, educators, Church leaders, and community organizations to work together for the wellbeing and protection of children and families.
