Eleven (11) years after the tragic attacks on St. John’s Catholic Church and Christ Church, we honor the 15 lives lost—including the heroic Akash Bashir. Now recognized as a ‘Servant of God’ by the Pope, Akash’s sacrifice remains a beacon of courage and religious harmony in Pakistan.
The Hero of Youhanabad: Servant of God, Akash Bashir
Among the 15 innocent lives lost on March 15, 2015, the name of Akash Bashir stands out as a testament to ultimate sacrifice. A young volunteer security guard at St. John’s Catholic Church, Akash confronted a suicide bomber at the entrance.
Despite the imminent danger, he famously declared, “I will die, but I will not let you go inside,” preventing the attacker from entering the crowded church and saving hundreds of worshipers.
In recognition of his extraordinary faith and bravery, Pope Francis officially titled Akash Bashir a “Servant of God” in 2022, marking the first step toward potential sainthood—a historic moment for the Church in Pakistan.

Remembering the Twin Attacks
The twin suicide bombings targeted both St. John’s Catholic Church and Christ Church during Sunday worship. The blasts injured approximately 70 people and sent shockwaves through the global Christian community.
While the day remains a painful chapter in the history of Lahore, it is also remembered for the immense unity shown by the local community in the face of terror.

A Call for Peace and Religious Harmony
Each year, the 11th anniversary serves as a solemn day of prayer for the martyrs and their families. The sacrifice of Akash Bashir and the other victims continues to inspire a mission of:
- Lasting Peace: Working toward a Pakistan where every citizen can worship without fear.
- Interfaith Unity: Building bridges of understanding across different religious communities.
- Spiritual Resilience: Honoring the martyrs by living out the values of faith and courage they died defending.
As we pray for the souls of the martyrs today, we renew our commitment to the peace and harmony they so bravely stood for.
