International Women’s Day Celebrated in Lahore with Call for “Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls”

Lahore, March 8, 2026 — The Catholic Women’s Organization (CWO) Lahore, in collaboration with Caritas Pakistan Lahore and the Pakistan Minority Movement (PMM), marked International Women’s Day 2026 with a vibrant and meaningful program at St. Francis Parish, Kot Lakhpat, Lahore, under the global theme: “Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls.”

he event brought together more than 230 participants, including women, youth, and community members, with the aim of promoting awareness, empowerment, and collective responsibility for advancing the dignity and rights of women and girls.

The program opened with a warm welcome by Ms. Shaheen Yousaf, Diocesan Coordinator of CWO Lahore, who appreciated the collaborative efforts of partner organizations and encouraged participants to work together for a more just and inclusive society.

Mr. Naeem Naz highlighted the historical roots of International Women’s Day, tracing it back to early 20th-century movements advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, and equal rights. He emphasized the importance of continuing this legacy by promoting equality and dignity for all.

A key presentation was delivered by Ms. Bushra Khaliq, Executive Director of Women in Struggle for Empowerment (WISE), who addressed the realities faced by women in Pakistan. While acknowledging progress in education and leadership, she underscored the ongoing challenges of inequality and discrimination. She called for greater awareness of legal rights and encouraged women to actively participate in social and community life.

Legal awareness formed an important part of the program, as Ms. Kiran Afzal, Advocate High Court, informed participants about fundamental rights, including education, inheritance, protection from violence, and equal opportunities in employment. She noted that lack of awareness often prevents women from seeking justice and protection.

Spiritual reflections were offered by Sr. Joan Allah Rakha (FTL, Board Member CWO Lahore) and Mr. Edlian God Fry, who highlighted the inspiring examples of biblical women such as Mary, Mother of Jesus, Ruth, and Deborah, encouraging participants to embrace faith, courage, and leadership in their daily lives.

The event was graced by Chief Guest Mr. Peter Charles, Chairman of the Pakistan Minority Movement, who stressed the importance of education, safety, and equal opportunities for women and girls. He also advocated for fair political representation of minorities, emphasizing their right to elect their own representatives.

Another chief guest, Sr. Genevieve Ram Lal, Member of the National Commission on the Status of Women, spoke about the cultural and social barriers that hinder women’s progress. She encouraged participants to recognize their potential, raise their voices against injustice, and support one another in building a more equitable society.

The program also featured cultural and interactive presentations by women and girls, celebrating their strength, resilience, and contributions to society. These performances added a vibrant and engaging dimension to the event.

In his concluding remarks, Rev. Fr. Henry Paul, OFM Cap, Parish Priest of St. Francis Church, appreciated the efforts of CWO Lahore and emphasized the importance of unity and mutual support in creating a future where women are respected and empowered.

The celebration concluded on a hopeful note, inspiring participants to stand together in solidarity and to actively promote the rights, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls in their communities.
