Vatican City — The Mass for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate will be celebrated on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Rome time in St. Peter’s Square. This solemn liturgy marks the official beginning of his ministry as Successor of Peter and Bishop of Rome.
During the ceremony, two important symbols of the Petrine ministry will be presented:
1. The Pallium, a white woolen band symbolizing the Pope’s role as the shepherd of the flock of Christ.
2. The Fisherman’s Ring, which represents the apostle Peter’s mission and faith. The ring recalls Peter’s call to be a “fisher of men,” drawing from the Gospel account where Peter, at Jesus’ command, let down his nets and experienced a miraculous catch.
Faithful from around the world are expected to gather in prayer and joy as the Church welcomes Pope Leo XIV to his new ministry with the prayerful hope that he may lead with faith, humility, and the courage of the Gospel.
