Bishop Yousaf Sohan Appointed Member of Vatican Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue

A Moment of Honor for the Church in Pakistan

Vatican City / Multan – July 3, 2025
In a significant move for the Church in Pakistan, His Excellency Bishop Yousaf Sohan, Bishop of Multan, has been appointed by Pope Leo XIV as a member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue. The appointment, announced on July 3, 2025, comes as part of the Holy Father’s broader effort to foster global dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding between faith traditions.

The Vatican Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue is tasked with building bridges between the Catholic Church and other religious communities, especially in contexts marked by division and conflict. Bishop Sohan joins a global panel of cardinals, bishops, and theologians from Asia, Africa, and the West, reinforcing Pakistan’s growing role in the Church’s universal mission of peace.

Appointed bishop in 2022, Bishop Yousaf Sohan brings with him years of pastoral experience and a deep dedication to the spiritual and social development of communities under his care. His role in the dicastery will contribute to the Church’s ongoing work in building relationships across religious and cultural boundaries.

In a nation where Christian-Muslim relations are often tested, Bishop Sohan’s appointment is a sign of the Church’s desire to be a bridge of reconciliation and a voice of reason. As Pakistan’s representative in this global forum, Bishop Sohan brings with him not only theological expertise but also pastoral experience of living faith under pressure, rooted in the Gospel call to “blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9).
