Men of Truth and Integrity”: Dean of Studies Inspires Graduates at Seminary Convocation

Dean of Studies Delivers Inspiring Address on the Role of Philosophy in Priestly Formation

Lahore – June 10, 2025
The Graduation Ceremony 2025 at St. Francis Xavier Major Seminary, Lahore, marked a significant milestone in the journey of 23 seminarians completing their Philosophical Studies. The celebration was graced by Very Rev. Fr. Basharat Exuper, Delegate Superior of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), as Chief Guest, and was attended by formators, faculty, clergy, religious, and members of the seminary community.

This year’s graduating class included 13 Diocesan seminarians6 Capuchins3 Dominicans, and 1 OMI student—all of whom were honored for their academic and spiritual accomplishments. The event was not only a formal academic transition but also a celebration of the deep intellectual and spiritual foundation that prepares these young men for their future theological studies and eventual priestly ordination.

The program began with a heartfelt welcome from Rev. Fr. Tahir AzizRector of the Seminary, who greeted all present on behalf of the formation team. He extended his gratitude to the guests, benefactors, academic staff, and families for their continuous support and prayers. Fr. Tahir also highlighted the importance of this moment in the lives of the graduates and the mission of the seminary in preparing future priests intellectually, spiritually, and pastorally.

A key moment of the ceremony was the address by Fr. Amjad YousafDean of Studies, whose speech offered a compelling reflection on the meaning and mission of philosophical formation in the life of a seminarian.

Philosophy as the Foundation of the Priestly Mind

Fr. Amjad began by emphasizing that philosophy is more than a prerequisite to theology—it is the intellectual bedrock of priestly life. Quoting St. John Paul II’s encyclical Fides et Ratio, he reminded the graduates that “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth.” He described philosophical study as a spiritual ascent, one that purifies the intellect and strengthens the will for the service of the Gospel.

“The knowledge you have gained here must not remain locked in books or classrooms. It must become flesh in your character.”

Fr. Amjad highlighted that philosophy forms not just thinkers, but authentic Christians and future ministers—free, responsible, and virtuous. Drawing on St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, he urged the graduates to allow the truths they’ve studied to shape their inner life and guide their pastoral mission.

Truth, Virtue, and Integrity in the Priesthood

Referencing Philippians 4:8, he stressed that philosophical formation is also a school of discipline and moral clarity. It is a process that challenges the seminarian not only to study truth but to become a man of truth.

“An authentic priest is not only a man of prayer and service, but a man of integrity. The truths you have studied must shape the way you speak, relate, lead, and live.”

A Word for the Journey Ahead

As the graduates prepare to enter the next phase of their formation—theological studies—Fr. Amjad encouraged them to carry forward the love of truth, the discipline of the intellect, and the humility of the heart.

“You have learned how to ask the right questions. Now you will dive into the answers that theology proposes in light of divine revelation.”

In his closing remarks, he congratulated the class of 2025, regardless of academic distinctions, and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the faculty and formators for their dedication to priestly formation.

“May the wisdom you have acquired here shine through your future priesthood like a lamp on a hill.”
